Thanksgiving and Spiritual Maturity
A journey into Colossae
Walking Worthy: A Reflection on Colossians 1:1–14
In the opening verses of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we are met with a beautiful mixture of thanksgiving, encouragement, and a powerful prayer that sets the tone for the entire epistle. Colossians 1:1–14 is not just an introduction—it’s a vision for what a Christ-centered life looks like.
1. A Community Rooted in Faith (vv. 1–8)
Paul begins with a warm greeting to the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae. Right away, we see his heart for the church—he’s thankful. But his thanksgiving isn’t generic; it’s specific. He gives thanks for their faith in Christ Jesus, their love for all the saints, and their hope laid up in Heaven.
“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you…” (Colossians 1:3, ESV)
These three virtues—faith, love, and hope—are the core of Christian living. Faith anchors us in Christ, love pours out toward others, and hope keeps us pressing forward. And what’s amazing is that this hope comes through the Word of truth—the gospel (v. 5). The same gospel that was bearing fruit and growing all over the world was doing the same in their lives.
This passage reminds us: the gospel isn’t stagnant. It grows. It changes lives. And Paul honors the role of Epaphras, the one who shared this truth with them. Gospel growth often begins with one faithful person sharing the good news.
2. A Prayer for Spiritual Maturity (vv. 9–14)
From verse 9 onward, Paul shifts into a heartfelt prayer, and it’s one we would do well to make our own.
He prays that the Colossians would be:
Filled with the knowledge of His will
In all spiritual wisdom and understanding
So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord
What a powerful picture: knowing God’s will isn’t just about information—it’s about transformation. Paul ties knowing God’s will to walking in a way that pleases Him. A worthy walk includes bearing fruit in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God, and being strengthened with all power.
And not just any power—His glorious might—so that they may endure with patience and joy.
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son…” (Colossians 1:13, ESV)
These verses conclude with one of the most beautiful summaries of the gospel. We were in darkness—but He delivered us. We were lost—but He transferred us into the kingdom of Jesus. We were guilty—but in Him, we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Living It Out
Colossians 1:1–14 calls us to a deeper life in Christ. It calls us to gratitude, to spiritual growth, and to walk in a way that reflects the One who rescued us. The same gospel that transformed the Colossians is still at work today—bearing fruit in our lives when we remain rooted in Him.
So today, let’s ask ourselves:
Am I growing in my knowledge of God?
Is my walk pleasing to Him?
Am I relying on His strength to endure with joy?
May we, like the Colossians, be known for our faith, love, and hope—and may we walk worthy of the Lord who redeemed us.
We always encourage you to check everything through the lens of the scriptures, and we are no exception. Brothers and sisters, let us be like the noble Bereans, and do like John says in his 1st Epistle, test the spirits to be sure they are of God. We also desire that everyone pray and spend time with God every day, as often as humanly possible.
We invite you to visit us for much more and to contact us for any way we may be able to encourage you in your walk with Christ.
Until we meet again, let's go serve our King!
