Pressing On Toward the Goal: A Reflection on Philippians 3:12-21
Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, victories and setbacks. As believers, our journey is marked by a pursuit of Christ—an ongoing process of growth, sanctification, and transformation. In Philippians 3:12-21, the Apostle Paul gives us a powerful reminder of what it means to press on toward the goal of knowing Christ fully. His words are both encouraging and convicting, urging us to keep our eyes on the prize: our heavenly calling in Christ Jesus.
Not That I Have Already Obtained It
Paul begins this passage with humility: "Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own" (Philippians 3:12, ESV). Even Paul, an apostle and devoted servant of Christ, recognized that he had not yet arrived. He was still in the process of being transformed, and he saw his faith journey as an active pursuit. This serves as a reminder that none of us have "arrived" spiritually; rather, we are all in the ongoing process of being conformed to the image of Christ.
Forgetting What Lies Behind and Straining Forward
One of the most powerful statements in this passage is in verse 13: "But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead." How often do we allow our past failures, regrets, or even successes to define us? Paul encourages us to let go of the past—whether good or bad—and to focus on what is ahead: a life lived for Christ and eternity with Him.
In a race, a runner does not look back; instead, he keeps his eyes fixed on the finish line. Similarly, we are called to keep our focus on Christ, pursuing Him with all that we are. Dwelling on past mistakes or achievements can hinder our growth, but pressing forward keeps us in step with the Spirit.
Our Citizenship is in Heaven
Paul contrasts those who live for earthly things with those who have their eyes set on eternity. He warns that many "walk as enemies of the cross of Christ" (v.18), whose focus is on worldly pleasures and temporary gains. However, for believers, "our citizenship is in Heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ" (v.20). This truth should shape how we live, make decisions, and view the trials we face.
As citizens of Heaven, our values, hopes, and aspirations should not be dictated by the world. Instead, we should be motivated by the promise of our future transformation when Christ returns. Paul reminds us that Jesus "will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body" (v.21), securing our eternal hope.
Pressing On in Faith
The Christian life is not a passive experience but an active pursuit. Paul’s encouragement to "press on" reminds us that our faith requires perseverance, intentionality, and reliance on Christ. We are called to run this race with endurance, keeping our eyes on Jesus and striving toward the goal of knowing Him more intimately.
As you reflect on Philippians 3:12-21, ask yourself: Am I pressing on toward the goal? Am I letting go of the past and striving toward what lies ahead? Is my focus on earthly things or my heavenly citizenship?
Let us be a people who run this race with endurance, fixing our eyes on Christ, and looking forward to the day when we will see Him face to face.
